Join us for
the 20th annual Northampton Shelter Sunday, to be held on October 2 from
10:00am
to 4:00pm
at Pulaski Park on Main Street in Northampton and Florence Savings Bank
in Florence. And then join us for our 20th Birthday Party at
Pulaski Park at 4:00!
In an effort to make
canvassing as easy as possible for our volunteers, we have come up with
some helpful tips and tools.
To be successful when
going door to door, keep your "script" as simple as possible.
A couple of examples are:
For someone you
know:
"Hi. I'm going around our neighborhood seeking donations for
Shelter Sunday. I imagine you've heard of this event before.
It benefits five different organizations that serve the homeless in
our area. Would you be able to give a small donation to help
this important cause?"
For someone you
don't know:
"Hi. I'm _____________, and I'm going around the neighborhood
seeking donations for Shelter Sunday. I imagine you've heard
of this event before. It benefits five different organizations
that serve the homeless in our area. Would you be able to give
a small donation to help this important cause?"
Be prepared to answer
basic questions the potential donor may have. Some FAQ are:
Which agencies
benefit?
This year the agencies that benefit are Grove Street Inn,
Interfaith Emergency Shelter, Safe Passage, the MANNA Soup Kitchen, and the Single Room Occupancy Project.
How much money
is raised each year?
Our goal is to raise $50,000. Last year, we reached this goal.
I don't have any
money today, but can I send a donation somewhere next week?
Absolutely. There is a pledge card in the brochure along with
a return envelope. Simple mail it at your earliest
convenience. Or you can donate online at
www.northamptonsheltersunday.org.
How many
homeless people are in Northampton?
Each year there are hundreds of individuals and families served by
the participating agencies. The number of people needing these
important services grows each year, which is why Shelter Sunday has
become so important.
I would like to
help next year. How do I go about doing that?
We'd love to have you get involved next year. Please call
Wendy at 582-9508 or email
volunteer@northamptonsheltersunday.org and let her know you're
interested. In fact, if you're available this year, perhaps
you could help with a leaflet drop next week.
I already made a
Shelter Sunday donation this year. Didn't they receive it?
I'm sure they did, and thank you very much. I apologize for
the inconvenience.
If going door-to-door
is not your style, we have the perfect solution for you. Simply
download our sample
donation request letter, print it out, and tape it to your
neighbors' doors along with a Shelter Sunday brochure and return
envelope. The letter asks that your neighbors leave their donation
out for you to pick up the following day. All you need to do is go
back out and collect the donations. That's it. It couldn't
be any simpler than that!
